In 1966, Area Ten Community College opened its doors to 199 students in several Cedar Rapids sites. The institution’s name was officially changed to Kirkwood Community College in 1969 in honor of Samuel J. Kirkwood, an early abolitionist and governor of Iowa during the American Civil War.

The institution appointed Dr. Lori Sundberg as its fifth president in 2018, making her the first woman to hold the position. With an average class size of 21 and 16,781 students enrolled for the 2018–2019 academic year, 330 international students from 100 different countries were enrolled.

The Higher Learning Commission has accredited Kirkwood Community College (HLC). More than 120 different degrees, certificates, and certifications are available from Kirkwood. A program run by Kirkwood allows high school students in Iowa’s 47 high schools to earn college credits during their junior and senior years.

Baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s basketball make up the Kirkwood Eagles athletic programs. The institution participates in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference and is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) (ICCAC).
